Keto diet & bodybuilding
|
The diet looks a bit odd as it means I will reduce my protein intake.
Anyone got any successful experience of a keto diet?

It's a fair rule, but I'd still rather swap a sausage roll or muffin at breakfast for gins in the evening...

It's like anything in life. Quick fixes can definitely be of enormous benefit in the short-term, but at some point you're going to have to address the underlying issue and come up with a more robust solution.
To whoever asked about the breath thing. That smell is acetone, which is a ketone. Ketones have got to leave your body somehow, and that's what's happening. But if you drink a lot of water (a couple of pints morning, afternoon and evening) then this won't happen, and you'll piss it out instead. You'll also feel a bit more full and prevent other dehydration issues (skin, kidneys etc.)
It is all about that post-diet strategy though. You really do need to enjoy some food and fun in the long run! Eventually just a few gym sessions each week on a decent balanced diet, should let you have a few beers and a kebab at the weekend while staying the same size!
Anyway. Time for lunch! Chunky curry today.

My dad was a bit of health nut and lots of his fads have come and gone (Cod liver oil, so much wheat germ etc.).
But one thing that has served me well, when I have followed it, I got from him is don't drink your calories.
So pop or anything sugared generally and even fruit and veg than has been packaged and stripped of their fibre etc in juices probably best avoided.

Agreed. Not all fats are equal, nor are all carbs. Best rule of thumb i have heard is only eat food with one ingredient, add to that cutting out foods (and drinks unfortunately) with a high glycaemic load and you wont go far wrong.

I very much agree that the straight "fat bad" propaganda has been a huge health disaster. I look at a bunch of low/no fat items that became a thing during that time and all they do is replace the fat with sugar.
And if you choice is keto or obese, very little can be worse than obese.
What I have read is that using keto to get a decent weight then transition off it (still avoiding simple carbs most of the time) is probably better than trying to live your whole life on keto.

Have a look at a graph of obesity or type 2 diabetes rates in the west since the seventies, when we switched to a high carb low fat diet.

Full keto is just annoying I see no benefit over a balanced healthy diet especially if bodybuilding when you need carbs/protein

In the short term on the breath for the some people, be extra vigilant with the brushing and mouthwash.
There are others ways to get fibre other than carbs. Lots of low carb veg, some nuts, chia seeds and ground flax, for instance.

Serious question - does it give you problems below and does it make your breath stink?
I did the durkin some years back and the weight flew off but going for a crap became hard as it was hard. Lack of carbs and fibre meant crapping rocks. Also my breath became pongy.

A lot of cross fitters do Keto diets.
Most bodybuilders have a very strict diet and are eating high amounts of carbs off season before the usual 12 week cut.
Depends on your goals. Positive and negative to everything. Personally fuck diets and fuck bodybuilding, the sore joints, the walking like a hod carrier, the narcissist tendencies, the body dismorphia, counting macros, body part splits, etc -
Just go lift weights, do some cardio and cut back on the shit food.

I did ketogenic diet for six months about 2 years ago, and have just recently started again (2 weeks in). Great for weight loss. Gave up last time as I couldn't stop losing weight, went from 96kgs to 82kg. I like food and what I like about keto is the appetite suppression. After a couple of weeks I already want to eat less and a higher protein in take keeps you full for longer as apposed to a high carb diet Any weight you lose in the first 2-3 weeks is water retention not fat loss, if you get back on the carbs this weight will quickly return. Body takes 12 weeks to become fully fat adapted (body burns fat as its primary source of energy}. Between weeks 5-7 your suffer an energy dip but this does return. Body builders prefer to have glycerin in their bodies before working out as it gives them explosive power that you lose on keto. Many use a targeted keto diet (tkd) and take upto 25g of easily digestible carbs before each workout. Carbs will get consumed during the workout and body stays in ketosis. I'm a triathlete not a body builder so have not had alot of experience of tkd.

No experience with body building, so take this for what it is worth.
I have been on very low carbs, especially simple carbs for years because of a history of diabetes in my family.
I have eliminated them altogether at times and withdrawal can be very real. But overall I feel much better without sugar or "white foods". That works for me and my health.
That all said, some of the more educated people I have read consider keto a good short term way to lose weight but the long term effects of it are not known. So maybe not a permanent lifestyle choice.

Basically what Fivetide said.
I went on a keto diet last September for 3 weeks and it worked well in terms of losing weight and fat around the tummy.
No energy level loss (I'm 56, cycle weekly and pretty fit.)
However, I don't body build!
